The 5 big benefits of a wedding website
Weddings seem to get bigger and bigger these days, but technology is helping engaged couples to stay organized and even promote their wedding. For example, there's online wedding planner software (such as My Wedding Workbook) that lets couples store and manage all their wedding details online. And there's all sorts of iPhone and mobile applications that enable couples to track their vendors, count down to their wedding day and manage details in dozens of different ways. And then there's wedding websites.
The wedding website is a fairly new phenomenon, but it has taken the wedding world by storm. Wedding websites started out as simple one or two page "blogs" that simply introduced the world to the engaged couple and served as an online announcement. But today's website builders (like our A4DeskPro) enable brides and grooms to do much, much more than just put up a simple page with some words. (In fact, you can build a fully functional and dynamic Flash site with A4DeskPro and add our A4Desk Flash Photo Gallery Builder to show off all your wedding pictures). And how can a wedding website benefit you as you move closer to your trip down the aisle? Here are five reasons you should seriously consider one.
1. It offers a great platform to tell your story
If you are under the age of 35, then you and all your friends are already communicating and sharing ideas via Facebook, Twitter and MySpace, so a wedding website is just a natural extension of your online life. And it is the one place where you can go into detail about your relationship and your wedding plans. Here you can create special pages about how you met, how you got engaged, bios about each of you (especially useful if you are inviting people who don't know your future spouse very well yet), photo galleries of your pre-wedding events, and other personal facts about your relationship. Many wedding website builders also offer modules for your guests to post comments and even pictures regarding you and your spouse-to-be.
2. It provides an easy way to deliver logistical information
In the digital era, when most people need directions to find a specific location, they usually find it via MapQuest or Google. So putting the addresses to your wedding-related venues (like your ceremony and reception locations) as well as a link to Google or MapQuest maps on your wedding website can help guest much more easily find your venues. You can also place pictures of these venues on your site to give guests a sense of what they look like, and you can even go a step further and suggest hotel options for out-of-town guests as well as local points of interest that people can see while they are in town.
3. It points people to where you are registered
Most engaged couples are registered with at least a few different retailers, and many larger retailers have online registries. So wouldn't it be nice to be able to direct your guests to those sites where you are registered so they can do their shopping online. With a wedding web site, you can simply place links to those retailers so your guests can go to those sites, find you in the registry and view those items that you have requested.
4. It simplifies communications
Simply by putting a link to your email address or by having an online form that people can fill out on your site (and the content is then emailed to you) can simplify how your guest can get ahold of you in a pinch. You can also put your phone number and other contact information there if you like (although for privacy reasons, less is usually better). And one tip here ... you should create a specific e-mail address for your wedding. Just go to Gmail or Hotmail and create a unique email and use it for anything that is wedding related. Why do this? Mainly because you will probably be signing up or registering on many Web sites and forums in the interim, and you probably don't want to be receiving lots of wedding-related junk email after you are married, so by creating a wedding-specific email you can simply shut it off or ignore it after you are married.
5. Keeps people on time
Many couples post the schedule of all the events leading up to and on their wedding day on their wedding web sites, and for good reason. At least some of your guests will probably misplace their invitations and/or forget what time the ceremony starts or when the reception begins. By repeating all this information on your wedding web site, you give people another place to "refresh their memory" and make sure they are in the right place at the right time.
